Red wines are created through the maceration process, whereby the skins of the grapes are left in contact with the extracted juice, in order for the Anthocyanins (compound within the grape containing colour) to colour the juice. The resulting wines will vary in their shade of red; according to the duration of maceration, the grape variety and the wine making techniques applied. There are a few grapes known as teinturier varieties that have naturally red juice, other than these all other grapes have clear juice.
