Genus Evergreen, usually dioecious these trees or shrubs are native to cool climates of the northern hemisphere in North America and Eurasia. The branches are irregularly alternate, not differentiated into long and short shoots. The needles are spirally arranged, twisted at the base into two ranks, linear and soft with two stomatal bands beneath. The pollen cones are solitary, borne in double rows along the shoots. Yews are renowned for their ability to regenerate from dormant buds on even severely damaged or cut branches and trunks.
