Best Conifers for Ground Cover

Best Conifers for Ground Cover

Posted by Helen Soudain on

Conifers are a great option if you need to cover a large or small space in the garden. Junipers are especially ideal for ground cover and because they are evergreen bring colour and texture all year round.

We have picked some of our favourers from our collection of home-grown conifers here at Lime Cross Nursery, they can all be pruned to keep the shape and size you desire. We recommend pruning on a nice dry day in spring or mid-simmer, ideally with a good pair of sharp secateurs to keep a natural shape to the foliage.

A little tip - remove branches from underneath so the foliage on top hides where you have pruned.

Juniperus virginiana 'Grey Owl’ is a vigorous evergreen conifer making a medium-sized shrub with a spreading bushy habit and arching main branches bearing bright blue-grey, scale-like foliage and purplish fruits.

Juniper conferta Schlager is a lovely dwarf carpet building conifer. The bright silvery green prickly foliage is an addition to the garden.

Juniperus 'Carbery Gold' is a slow-growing, prostrate, spreading shrub with elegant, arching branches have flat, scale-like, yellow leaves which may turn more golden-yellow in winter.
