Abies are evergreen conifers, widespread in Asia, Central America, Europe, North America and North Africa. Often very tall, with spiralled branches bearing flattened, linear leaves. The seed-cones stand upright on the branches unlike Spruces which have pendulous cones. Young cones are very eye-catching, ranging in colours from white, green, blueish violet and a purple red.

Abies pinsapo 'Horstmann' is an exceptional compact evergreen conifer with short stiff brilliant blue needles that are arranged radially around the branchlets. It has a spreading and round habit in youth that becomes densely pyramidal with age. Another striking feature is their pinkish purple upright cones which turn to shades of brown over time. This Abies is also very drought tolerant & also particularly great in a small garden.
